- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Steven Gomzi -- A grand tribute to one of our finest authors. : Marc Burrows has delivered a near perfect tribute and celebration of Terry Pratchett, my favorite author, and one of the finest writers this world has ever seen. Dismissed by the literary establishment for far too long for being unfairly and incorrectly characterized as some kind of second rate fantasy parodist, it is a beautiful thing indeed to finally see Pratchett get the recognition he deserves. Pratchett has always been the modern equivalent of Dickens and Twain all rolled into one, and no other author even comes close to matching his brilliance in regards to his keen observations of humanity, religion, economics, societies, philosophy, and his underlying message of how people should learn to treat others with kindness, regardless of differences of sex, or race, or age. - from Talvi -- TOP 500 REVIEWER : Nice done ( 4.0 out of 5 stars )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from AniFree -- Rekindled my love of Pratchett : authority figure and ended with both triumph and loss. Terry's life, and I'm sure he would have been pleased about this, made for an excellent story, and in Marc's hands it becomes an easy to read tale of ups, downs, and sherbert lemons. It's a great shame that we all know how it ends, but even that end is handled sensitively, spun out to its final point just as Terry himself did with his work. I had some inkling of how it might hit me when, at the end of chapter 2, I found myself really rooting for young Terry and hoping he would have a long writing career ahead of him despite the evidence of that career sitting on my bookshelf. As expected, after 263 pages and 66 years of getting to know this deeply intelligent, funny, loyal and justice driven man, I was beside myself when he died for what felt like a second time. But as I cried on the shoulder of my extremely baffled partner, I reflected on just how much I felt I had got to know him through Marc's words and the words of those who knew him best, and how I finally feel like I can read The Shepherds Crown and let Terry Pratchett go, and how, as far as biographies go, this one was an absolute stonker. - 3.0 out of 5 stars from J Whitgift -- Who was Sir Terry? : In his introduction to 'A Slip of the Keyboard', associate and friend of TP, Neil Gaiman talks about a book signing trip they did in America. As part of their trip they found themselves late for a meeting, and Gaiman discovered what drove TP, anger. TP later advised Gaiman not to misunderstand that anger, it was real and it is what drove TP to the heights he achieved. Where did this anger come from? - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Atlas -- Very Interesting : I have read this book and thoroughly enjoyed it. Written in Terry's style with footnotes. I did find the foot notes distracting at times when the information could just have been included in the sentence I was directed away from. All in all, a good read and one of those books you can reread and find stuff you missed. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 15, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Simon -- An authorised biography of Terry Pratchett : Written with great clarity and a huge depth of knowledge. Marc has interviewed Terry's friends and family and the book is filled with fascinating insights. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 1, 2020 )
